7 Space Self-Care Ideas For Your Well-Being

There was a small chance that you probably wouldn’t have received a self-care post this week. I had a long morning and by the time I got back home I was exhausted and the thought of writing a blog post made me feel even more exhausted. I’m in better place right now and besides having to do my laundry, I have the rest of the evening to relax. In reference to the title for this week, all forms of self-care caters to our well-being. Self-care is the thing we practice when we need to get back to ourselves, when we need a breather, and right before we reach a breaking point (please don’t wait until you reach this point before you practice self-care). In essence, self-care is the foundation of what helps us maintain our well-being. People who place their well-being first, are the ones who carve out time for self-care, it’s intentional and therefore is a natural part of their daily or weekly routine.

For this week’s post I was thinking about well-being and space as it relates to stress. Meaning, what are the things we can do in our space to keep us from getting overwhelmed or stressed. This won’t look the same for everyone. My mother’s form of self-care is cleaning because she can’t relax in a messy house. But I’m sure there are a lot of people who would not classify cleaning as a form of self-care because it’s a chore and as a society, we’ve been programmed to associate the word chore as an unpleasant activity. Regardless of the origin behind any behavior, if it makes you feel good then it’s your form of self-care. Below is the list I came up with this week for space self-care, keep in mind that some of the choices may not be traditional forms of how we choose to practice self-care.

FENG SHUI some of you may know more about this than I do. I’m familiar with what it is but I’m not well versed in it nor do I practice. it. For those who don’t know, feng shui is an ancient Chinese art of arranging buildings, objects, and space in an environment to achieve harmony and balance. It’s common for people to arrange their bedroom and other parts of their home using a feng shui design. Learn more here.

DECLUTTER this probably doesn’t sound like fun lol but nothing drives me crazy more than seeing clutter. I feel like the sight of clutter instantly makes my mind feel cluttered, and if it gets out of hand, there’s a good chance I will just throw everything out without going through it first. The goal is to get to clutter before it gets out of control. For example, I think most of us are guilty of letting our mail pile up. I try my best to stay on top of this. Every couple of days I go through my mail and toss what I don’t need to eliminate creating that stack.

MINIMALISM is that even the correct word for this lol? Minimalist are people who prefer to keep it simple, you would likely not see any clutter in their home and they tend to stick to the basics when decorating. I am not a minimalist but I’m also not overwhelmed by the pieces in my house either. Becoming a minimalist is definitely attainable. If this is a lifestyle you’re interested in you can start during your decluttering process.

LIGHT CANDLES this may not be everyone’s jam but I love having candles lit around the house, I use to have one burning in every room of my house and what I loved the most about that is, each room would have a different smell. Candles come in so many different fragrance and there are several fragrance options that cater to our well-being (lavender, aromatherapy, sage, etc). They are also incredibly inexpensive, stores like TJMaxx carry a plethora of options for a very reasonable price.

BUY FLOWERS this option has made many appearances on selfcareatforty lol because it’s one of my favorite things to do for self-care. I’ve learned that a lot of people don’t like flowers because they die, I say just buy more lol. I’ve recently gotten into buying flowers from Trader Joes, they have a lot of unconventional flowers for $3.99-$5.99. I like to replace my arrangements on a weekly basis.

ZOOM PRIVACY this is different but certainly relevant for anyone who works from home. I was on a zoom meeting a few weeks ago and one of the participants shared that she’s usually off camera during meetings because her home is her sacred space and she likes to keep it separate from her work life. Everyone who uses zoom knows they have a lot of background options, I don’t use them because they never seem to work out well for me. One that I’ve seen, that I really like blurs out the background but it doesn’t blend you into the background the way the others do. If you’re curious and have an account, create a meeting with a friend and play around with the options.

HOME DECOR I’m a firm believer in your esthetic should speak to who you are as person. While I appreciate it, I don’t really like when people offer me pieces that don’t fit in with my personal style. I think some people are perfectly happy with just placing whatever piece they get in their home, personally when I walk into my space, and it looks the way I want it to look, it gives me a “welcome to your home” feeling. I can’t explain it.

Self-Care on the go are essentially bite size versions of my self-care challenges. It’s open to anyone but it’s specifically created for moms and other working women; who may not have time to participate in all (or any) of the challenges that I provide weekly because of their mommy duties or busy work schedule. You can access the infographic HERE. I’ve been posting them every Sunday since the beginning of the year and I really enjoy creating them. If you’re one of my readers who participate in, or enjoy these options because you find them convenient, leave a comment and let me know what you like about them or what you think I should change. Thanks for going on this self-care journey again with me this week.

I have a long history with mental illness. Overcoming depression made me realize my own resilience. It also made it clear that I wasn’t taking care of myself. I believe that in order for us to fully engage with ourselves and others we have to make time for self-love through our self-care habits. My goal with this blog is to encourage women in my age group to make time for self-care daily.
