7 Spiritual Self-Care Practices To Help Start Your Day

It dawned on me earlier this week that we are damn near at the end of the month. I was thinking about the post I wanted to write for today and Wednesday and after looking at the calendar, I realized that this is the last spiritual self-care post and Wednesday’s post will be an entirely different topic. If you’re one of my regulars then you’ll know what I mean when I say that there will be no wellness round up for the month of August. Taking some time off really threw my blogging schedule off a bit, but I digress. This week I want to focus on how we can kickstart our day with spiritual self-care. A lot of these ideas will sound familiar but I think they’re great options for incorporating spiritual self-care in your morning/daily routine. You can try them all or choose the option(s) that best suits your current lifestyle.

One thing that comes to mind when I think about the ideas for spiritual self-care is, how will this challenge help us connect with ourselves. Spirituality is not just a connection with a higher being, I think it’s also a connection to deepen the relationship that we have with ourselves. Spirituality can be practiced with others but it’s also really affective when the practice just involves ourselves. The outside world can be distracting, and distractions takes away our focus. When we focus on our spiritual self-care, it brings our focus back to the connection that elevates us to a higher level. This week’s challenges are ideas you can use all in one day or you can try a different one each day. The decision will be made based on the amount of time you have with yourself in the morning. If you’d like you can do these with your significant other, kids or the entire family.

DAILY BREAD if you’re not a christian then you’re probably not familiar with this phrase. The daily bread is a devotional booklet that includes writings from the bible and insights into christian living. I know not everyone is religious so I am not suggesting that you read this. I just chose to name this challenge “daily bread” because I believe it can be a practice for any spiritual reading that we choose to help start our day. Maybe for some it is the daily bread. For others it might be a book of affirmations, the bible, a book with positive quotes or passages, etc. for this challenge the goal is to read your personal “daily bread” to help start your day on a high note.

MEDITATION this challenge has been on my Sunday post on several occasions but this is the ultimate spiritual self-care practice. There are many forms of meditation out there and if you enjoy meditating, challenge yourself to try a different form of meditation each time you practice.

INTERMITTENT FASTING I was going to suggest fasting since it’s a practice that’s done for spiritual reasons but I chose intermittent fasting because it’s quite popular these days. If you choose to engage in this challenge, while you’re in the process of fasting, be intentional and fast with a spiritual purpose. I am not a medical professional so if you have any health issues please consult with your doctor before you choose to engage in this challenge.

PRAYER or repeat and practice an affirmation. Again, not everyone is religious but I believe that we all have our own form of praying. If praying is not your cup of tea, repeat and practice an affirmation. For example, if your affirmation is about having a productive day, create a list of things you want to get done and make your way through the list.

JOURNAL I love this challenge and I love journaling it’s such an intimate activity because the information shared is between you and your journal. Whenever I pose this challenge I always say that journaling is easily our best friends because you know that what’s shared will not go beyond your journal.

READ A CHAPTER OF YOUR BOOK I suggest getting a book on spirituality or connecting with yourself, or any book that you know will help boost your energy or self-esteem before you get your day started.

HOLD SPACE I dont think this is done often enough. I encourage you to hold space for your feelings, especially the negative ones because those seem to be the ones that we dismiss or sweep under the rug. I’m aware that this might not be an ideal practice to help start your day but you can set the intention to hold space for yourself when these feelings is arise throughout the day.

Self-Care on the go are essentially bite size versions of my self-care challenges. It’s open to anyone but it’s specifically created for moms and other working women; who may not have time to participate in all (or any) of the challenges that I provide weekly because of their mommy duties or busy work schedule. You can access the infographic HERE. I’ve been posting them every Sunday since the beginning of the year and I really enjoy creating them. If you’re one of my readers who participate in, or enjoy these options because you find them convenient, leave a comment and let me know what you like about them or what you think I should change. Thanks for going on this self-care journey again with me this week.

I have a long history with mental illness. Overcoming depression made me realize my own resilience. It also made it clear that I wasn’t taking care of myself. I believe that in order for us to fully engage with ourselves and others we have to make time for self-love through our self-care habits. My goal with this blog is to encourage women in my age group to make time for self-care daily.
