7 Social Self-Care Ideas That Will Surprise You

Another monthly self-care focus in the books. Today is the last day for the social self-care series and just like all the others, this one was a bit of a challenge but I like to think that the options I gave this month were unique. Although they were common I felt like I created the opportunity for you to view each of the ideas this month through a self-care lens. If you’re wondering what I mean by “self-care lens” it’s simple, its means that the feeling of joy we get when we engage in an activity; that is our self-care moment. Even if it only last for a minute. When I started the self-care focus several months ago I suggested paying attention to how each of the challenges made you feel because not everyone experiences self-care the same, and not everyone enjoys the same form of self-care. What I’ve learned about social self-care is, it’s primarily hanging out and having a good time, or engaging in group activities with your friends like going for manis and pedis together.

Perhaps you’ve read and tried all the options that I presented this month and you didn’t like any of it, and that’s fine too. It just means that social self-care is not really your ideal form of self-care. I will however encourage you to take a chance and try. Everything will not always be for us but trying won’t hurt because it gives you a chance to talk about your experience especially if everyone else’s opinion is different from your own. This week I wanted to present a set of ideas that most people would probably not consider self-care hence my title “ideas that will surprise you.” I’m sure you’ve already engaged in a lot of these options.

Group Meditation although there’s a little more flexibility with the world opening back up, there are probably some of you who are not interested in meeting in a group setting but years ago I use to belong to a meditation group. We would get together once per week and meditate. Meditation is often done alone but in a group setting it’s definitely a form of social self-care.

Yoga this is an option that most if not all of you have participated in, in a group setting. You can perform Yoga alone but I think it’s best in a group especially if it’s your first time because you’ll have an instructor who guides you and fixes your form if your form is off. Much like the above, Yoga can be done alone, but done at a studio with others it’s definitely a form of social self-care.

Exercise Class this is similar to the above but this entails all classes that are offered at your gym. Being physically active is a form of self-care but I think exercising usually falls under physical self-care. It is a form of physical self-care but it’s also social self-care because it occurs in a group setting.

Girls Spa Day this is probably most people’s favorite lol. Spa day with the girls is a great opportunity for you to get together with your friends catch up, relax, and get in a few good laughs. This also works for men. I’m sure some men get together for a spa day but I think men typically get together to watch sporting events.

Singing Bowls I talked about singing bowls in this blog post. And I have a friend who engages in this activity. Last summer she created an invite for anyone who was interested to join her on the beach for a morning singing bowl session. I think this can be form of mediation but as mentioned, done in a group setting it is a form of social self-care.

Salsa Dancing or any dancing for that matter. I’ve done this a time or two and if you haven’t, it’s a lot of fun, it’s a great workout, and if you’re feeling down it will definitely pick up your spirits. If you’re not much of a dancer, you should still try it you will have a good time and learn some new moves.

Wine Tasting I think I mentioned this already this month but this is usually done in groups or pairs hence the reason I believe this activity is a form of social self-care. If you know me you’d be surprised at what I’m about to say but I’ve never been wine tasting before and I thoroughly enjoy a good glass of wine with great company and good conversation. Similar to the girls spa day idea, this is an opportunity for friends to get together, catch up, and have a few laughs.

Self-Care on the go are essentially bite size versions of my self-care challenges. It’s open to anyone but it’s specifically created for moms and other working women; who may not have time to participate in all (or any) of the challenges that I provide weekly because of their mommy duties or busy work schedule. You can access the infographic HERE. I’ve been posting them every Sunday since the beginning of the year and I really enjoy creating them. If you’re one of my readers who participate in, or enjoy these options because you find them convenient, leave a comment and let me know what you like about them or what you think I should change. Thanks for going on this self-care journey again with me this week.

I have a long history with mental illness. Overcoming depression made me realize my own resilience. It also made it clear that I wasn’t taking care of myself. I believe that in order for us to fully engage with ourselves and others we have to make time for self-love through our self-care habits. My goal with this blog is to encourage women in my age group to make time for self-care daily.
