7 Nature Inspired Self-Care Ideas

It doesn’t feel much like Spring to me because in NYC we still have some days where the temp. is in the 40s. But most days we are in the 60s+ so I thought self-care ideas inspired by spring would be perfect for this time of year. As usual, I had to get creative because our self-care love language focus is physical touch and when I came up with the idea, I had to think about how I can relate it to this month’s focus. Recently I’ve been reviewing my old blog post and I’m noticing some changes in the self-care challenges that I post each week, I like to think of it as an evolution because I haven’t really been giving you ideas that are typically used for self-care. Instead of meditating, journaling, working out, etc. I’ve been providing you with other options such as yoga poses that require you to touch different parts of your body, affirmation challenges, and self-care detox ideas such as detoxing your mind, space, body, and soul. These are most certainly self-care ideas but they are ideas that will help you to grow and get in tuned with yourself on a higher level.

I’m not a big nature person, and by that I mean I am not a fan of camping, hiking, etc. I just find it really hard to relax if I’m worried about snakes, spiders, poison ivy, or any other unknown creatures that I may cross paths with because I’ve entered their territory lol. But I do enjoy a nice day, there’s nothing better than a nice 72 degree spring Saturday afternoon where you know the sun is not too hot, there’s a nice breeze, and you know that daylight will last until around 7p that evening. I may not be the first to volunteer to walk a trail but I can appreciate the benefits of connecting with the elements that nature has to offer. This is why I thought it would be important for me to create self-care ideas that cater to what nature has to offer us each day.

Sunday–FEEL THE WIND hopefully where ever you are there’s a nice wind blowing outside today. If you can, try to make it to the park, sit on one of the benches and wait for a nice gust of wind to sweep by. Focus on how it made you feel. Depending on the temperature the breeze might give you chills, goose bumps, or it may make the hair on your body stand up. If you just finished a workout, the wind might be refreshing and cooling. Meditate on all those benefits (and more) today when you take time to feel the wind.

Monday–FEEL THE GRASS if you don’t have a backyard try to make it to the park if you can. If you feel uncomfortable walking around in the grass maybe you can find an area where you can sit and put your barefoot in the grass. I really like walking in the grass with no shoes on because I like the way the grass feels on my feet. Depending on where you are, be careful and watch out for dog poop and possibly dog pee lol.

Tuesday–FEEL THE SUN on this day in NYC it’s supposed to be 72 degrees, that’s why I saved this challenge for today. Sometime in the mid-afternoon the sun should be at its peak. You don’t have to head to the park for this one, you can sit in your backyard or go for a walk because the sun will follow you where ever you go. Similar to Monday’s challenge, meditate and focus on the benefits of the sun. Depending on the temperature where you are, don’t forget to use sun screen or something with SPF in it.

Wednesday–FEEL THE RAIN there’s a 60% chance of rain today in NYC that’s why I saved this challenge for today. This challenge may seem a bit strange because who wants to be in the rain right? lol. If you’re comfortable and up to it, go ahead and play and get wet in the rain like you did when you were a kid, I’m sure it will be a lot of fun. If that’s too adventurous for you, I would suggest taking a quick walk while it’s still drizzling or you can go for a walk in the rain with your umbrella and occasionally let the rain drops fall on your hand or face. It’s up to you.

Thursday–FEEL THE DIRT this challenge is perfect if you have a garden but if you don’t, maybe there’s a trail in your area where you may feel comfortable playing in the dirt for a bit. It doesn’t have to be dirt, maybe in your neighborhood there’s some mulch that you can pick up or touch. The purpose of today’s challenge is to get a little dirty and connect with nature. Another option would be to re-pot some of your house plants.

Friday–FEEL THE GROUND go for a walk today and be mindful of each step by focusing on how it feels for your feet to touch the ground. As a person who’s mediated many times in the past, I’ve often been in practices where I was encouraged to get grounded by planting my feet on the floor. Today’s challenge is similar to that. Ground yourself during your walk by connecting with the feel of each step on the ground.

Saturday–FEEL NATURE this is such a broad challenge lol. But I mean what it says, some options would be to go for a walk and pick flowers if you can, touch the bark of trees that you find interesting (climb the tree if you can), throw rocks, collect branches for an arts and crafts projects, etc. just be creative.

Please note, based on how the weather is in your area, you may have to switch these challenges around. I arranged them based on the weather in my area but you can certainly rearrange these. This is still my favorite part of writing my self-care challenges post; my Self-Care on the Go infographic. Self-Care on the go are essentially bite size versions of my self-care challenges. It’s open to anyone but it’s specifically created for moms and other working women; who may not have time to participate in all (or any) of the challenges that I provide weekly because of their mommy duties or busy work schedule. You can access the infographic HERE. I’ve been posting them every Sunday since the beginning of the year and I really enjoy creating them. If you’re one of my readers who participate in, or enjoy these options because you find them convenient, leave a comment and let me know what you like about them or what you think I should change. Thanks for going on this self-care journey again with me this week.

By the way, if you’re interested, my Newsletter and Self-Care Accountability Worksheet is now available. The worksheet will act as a supplement to my daily self-care challenges. The purpose is to help you stay on track with your daily self-care routines. If you’re interested in receiving these items weekly, email me at tam33ks@yahoo.com. The self-care worksheet is FREE, but will only be available to my Newsletter subscribers. I will NOT spam you, I will only email once per week.

I have a long history with mental illness. Overcoming depression made me realize my own resilience. It also made it clear that I wasn’t taking care of myself. I believe that in order for us to fully engage with ourselves and others we have to make time for self-love through our self-care habits. My goal with this blog is to encourage women in my age group to make time for self-care daily.
