Wellness Roundup: February Edition

I decided that I want to make the last Wednesday in each month a round up post. It will essentially be a comprehensive post of all the Wednesday post I blogged about through the month. It will be a one stop shop for wellness. This way if you miss something, you don’t have to go back and catch up for the month. I’ll provide the crux of the post at the end of each month for you. I got the idea from the post I wrote for the last Wednesday in January. The focus was on acceptance and I created an infographic which highlighted all the key take-a-ways on acceptance. I like to think that my readers found this approach beneficial so I decided to keep up my trend for the month of February and moving forward.

I want to input a refresher here and for those who are new, the purpose of my wellness Wednesday post for the year. Similar to the self-care challenges for the year, I want to work on a specific focus for my wellness Wednesday post for each month. I decided to choose emotional self-care factors that we tend to struggle with such as compassion, mindfulness, acceptance, motivation, and so on. My topic for the month of February was supposed to be mindfulness but based on the conversations that occurred in my Facebook group, I felt focus would be a better topic. Focus is defined as “staying persistent with the task at hand, to continue to work towards whatever it is you need to do and ensure that you stay concentrated on that one activity.” Learn more about it here.

The topics I wrote about that centered around focus are as follows:

WHY WE LOSE MOMENTUM AND HOW WE CAN MAINTAIN I provided four steps that we can use to help us stay on track. Sometimes we lose momentum because it can be a challenge for us stick with a new habit, and other times we lose momentum because we are not seeing the progress that we’re expecting. For example, if you’ve never been good at managing your time, trying to change things over night or within a week might not be easy because you’re more accustomed to “moving with the wind,” not tracking your time. Similarly, if you’ve never been an organized person but would like to work on changing that, that change won’t happen overnight either. Also, change takes patience and time. Keep in mind slow progress does not equal no progress.

SUREFIRE WAYS FOR US TO GET THE MOST OUT OF OUR DAY In this post I created methods which were tailored to help us focus on our current methods that may (or may not) be working for us, and how we can tweak our current process to help us get more accomplished while still enjoying life. The goal is to utilize our time wisely to help us get the most out of our day.

DO YOU KNOW YOUR SELF-CARE FOCUS I’ve learned so much over the course of the past several months in terms of what self-care entails. Sometimes it’s reading a chapter in your book, journaling, sitting in silence, not responding to a text or an email, going to bed early, staying in your pajamas all day, planning your day, spending time with someone you love, doing your skincare routine, or cooking your favorite meal. Let go of the notion that self-care means you have to schedule a spa day or mani/pedi. It can be those things but it’s not only those things. Self-care is giving your body what it needs, when it needs it.

How do you get through each month? How do you maintain your focus? I feel like a lot of us struggle with trying to stay on track, especially if we’re trying to incorporate something new into our routine (workout, cooking more often, implementing a to do list, etc). In addition to what I’ve provided in this post, I want to encourage you all to be patient with yourself and to have a little grace. We don’t become experts overnight change takes time, just focus on making progress and strides not perfecting a new craft on your first try.

I have a long history with mental illness. Overcoming depression made me realize my own resilience. It also made it clear that I wasn’t taking care of myself. I believe that in order for us to fully engage with ourselves and others we have to make time for self-love through our self-care habits. My goal with this blog is to encourage women in my age group to make time for self-care daily.
