Dry Brushing

I was not aware of this whole concept of dry brushing until I watched one of my favorite YouTubers talk about it last year or back in 2018. Are you familiar with it? If not, According to self.com “Dry brushing is the process of using a brush with stiff bristles against the skin to help exfoliate dead cells from the skin surface and enhance blood flow,” Joshua Zeichner, M.D., director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Medical Center, tells SELF. The little bit I know:

–it helps the body release toxins

–you brush in an upward motion towards your heart

–you should do it before you get in the shower

And that might be it lol. After turning forty I decided that it was important for me to fully take care of myself. While we can’t live forever, I don’t think it’s ever too late to start taking care of our bodies inside and out.

Recently I started wondering when (and how) I will know if I’m reaping the benefits of dry brushing? Is it something that I’ll start to notice or should I just trust that it’s working? Is there a time frame? because my skin doesn’t look or feel any different. Is it worth it? Sometimes I feel like we adopt certain lifestyle changes just to “jump on the band wagon” or because it’s something that we never heard of but “it’s suppose to be good for you” so why not. I’m thinking that may have been the case for me with dry brushing. Hearing about the benefits from the YouTuber made me think that this was something I needed to incorporate in my routine. I plan on sticking with it though, I’ve decided that even if I’m not noticing visible changes right now it does not mean that the changes aren’t occurring or that the changes won’t occur over time.

Disclaimer: I am not a medical professional. If dry brushing is something you might be interested in I urge you to do your own research and possibly consult with your doctor before starting.

Hit me up if you have any questions or if you just want to chat or if you have any topics you would like me to cover I’ll be back soon. I try to post weekly.

I have a long history with mental illness. Overcoming depression made me realize my own resilience. It also made it clear that I wasn’t taking care of myself. I believe that in order for us to fully engage with ourselves and others we have to make time for self-love through our self-care habits. My goal with this blog is to encourage women in my age group to make time for self-care daily.
